Applying EEBs to appliances

$
0
0

Usually after upgrading an appliance to a new version the first thing we'll do is apply EEBs. Since they have to be applied via the menu system they each run the exact same checks, at approximately 30 seconds per EEB.

Acquiring appliance exclusive lock ... ok
Checking the EEB 'SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3106719-2.5.2.0-1.x86_64.rpm' ... ok
Comparing appliance version '2.5.2' with EEB version '2.5.2.0' ... ok
Checking if the EEB is already installed ... no
Checking for active NetBackup jobs ... ok

I propose that an ability to bulk-install EEBs be created so that they can all get installed in a single sweep; it'd be pretty easy to do just by adding a single option to the existing command. Instead of doing "install SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3106719-2.5.2.0-1.x86_64.rpm", do "install all" and it would go out and install all available patches it knows about (in /inst/patch/appliance/available/) that weren't currently installed.

You'd end up with something looking like :
Acquiring appliance exclusive lock ... ok
Checking for active NetBackup jobs ... ok
Checking the EEB 'SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3106719-2.5.2.0-1.x86_64.rpm' ... ok
Comparing appliance version '2.5.2' with EEB version '2.5.2.0' ... ok
Checking if the EEB is already installed ... no
Checking the EEB 'SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3105408-2.5.2.0-1.x86_64.rpm' ... ok
Comparing appliance version '2.5.2' with EEB version '2.5.2.0' ... ok
Checking if the EEB is already installed ... no
Checking the EEB 'SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3116615-2.5.2.0-3.x86_64.rpm' ... ok
Comparing appliance version '2.5.2' with EEB version '2.5.2.0' ... ok
Checking if the EEB is already installed ... no

For one or two EEBs the current process isn't a big deal but we're usually carrying 5-6 EEBs on our appliances so whenever they get upgraded it's a noticeable amount of time to patch them to current.

SLP deduplication reports

$

I have multiple SLPs where the image starts off on standard disk and then moves to dedup disk. Unfortunately none of the OpsCenter reports are capable of telling me what kind of space savings we're seeing on the images vs. their original size. I opened a Support case on this and was outright told it would be a custom SQL query to pull that kind of data. Any technote I've been able to find about SLP reports that might work contains the following cavet :

"The Completed Copy Size is a front-end size. The effects of deduplication, compression, or optimized deduplication on completed copy size are not considered in the SLP reports."

I'd like to see a canned report that displays that info. Take an SLP as input, output at least the backupid, original image size, & dedup'd image size. Bonus points if you display the policy/schedule info for the backupid too.

Issue: Changing tape drive

I need a solution

Hello everybody!

We have a big problem when our supplier changes a tape drive damaged. In our backup enviroment we use:

Library SL8500
ACSLS server versión 8.0.2
Oracle-Sun server, Solaris SunOS 5.10
4 media server on aix
After the supplier change a tape drive, we have to delete all tape drive from NBU 7.5.0.4, after we have to use wizard and create again the tape drives.

The issue starts, when new tape drive displays messages like this:

Jul  8 12:49:27 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[1900722]: ACS(1) going to DOWN state, status: Timeout waiting for robotic command
Jul  8 12:49:56 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3317880]: ACS(1) dismount failure for volume ABC123  on drive (0,0,1,5), ACS status = 29, STATUS_DRIVE_IN_USE
Jul  8 12:49:56 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3317880]: ACS(1) waiting to resubmit dismount request (attempt 2) for volume ABC123  on drive (0,0,1,5)
Jul  8 12:50:26 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3407982]: ACS(1) dismount failure for volume ABC456 on drive (0,3,1,8), ACS status = 29, STATUS_DRIVE_IN_USE
Jul  8 12:50:26 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3407982]: ACS(1) waiting to resubmit dismount request (attempt 2) for volume ABC456 on drive (0,3,1,8)
Jul  8 12:57:24 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3317880]: ACS(1) dismount failure for volume ABC123  on drive (0,0,1,5), ACS status = 29, STATUS_DRIVE_IN_USE
Jul  8 12:57:24 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3317880]: ACS(1) waiting to resubmit dismount request (attempt 3) for volume ABC123  on drive (0,0,1,5)
Jul  8 12:58:01 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3407982]: ACS(1) dismount failure for volume ABC456 on drive (0,3,1,8), ACS status = 29, STATUS_DRIVE_IN_USE
Jul  8 12:58:01 master_server daemon:err|error acsd[3407982]: ACS(1) waiting to resubmit dismount request (attempt 3) for volume ABC456 on drive (0,3,1,8)

So we don't have idea in which part of the components is the problem. I like to know if I need run some command from the media server, or from the acs server?
Someone have any idea?

Regards.

I need a solution

I attempted to ghost an esxi server with 1 vm, it appeared to complete just fine. When I attempted to use that image, esxi booted up fine but the datastore was missing. I used ghost 8.3.  To give a little insite into why I am doing this, this is some proprietary equipment I am working with , the contractor sends us a DVD with esxi + 1 vm it is a ghost dvd created with 11.5  I have 12 machines I need to image with this, by default what they give us needs LOTS of configuration, takes 3 hours to set up the VM, wanted to remaster the DVD or just simply use ghost server with my settings any help will be appreciated.

Safe to remove files in \Program Files\Veritas\Patch\ ?

I need a solution

Hello all,

I am running Netbackup 7.5 and have kept up to date with the Maintenance packs. We have a number of Windows virtual servers with small C drives that our Windows Admins are looking to free up space.

Is it safe to delete the files located in C:\Program Files\Veritas\Patch\? For example I see a list of all the patches I have installed for Netbackup that appear in order: NB_75_0_3_HNB_75_0_4_HNB_75_0_5_H,  etc. Should I remove the old patches and keep the current file?

Replicated Servers from Offsite Media Servers added to Vault

I need a solution

Hello all,

We run a monthly back up to tape from our Master Server using Vault Management. We also have a handful of offsite media servers with no tape robots that simply go to disk. I have setup replication from these media servers to our main Master server with our robot. My question is how do I get these replicated images cut to tape using Vault with our monthly process? Is it possible? It seems Vault is policy based and since these are replicated images from their Media Servers and not pulled in through a specific policy from the Master server I am unsure if this is possible.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Connectivity Issues in BE2010

$

I need a solution

I am having some trouble with BackupExec 2010. The media server is v.13.0 Rev. 2896 (64-bit).

We have 8 servers we back up- one is a SQL server, one is a Hyper-V server, one is an Exchange server, then there are a few file servers and a couple of VM's.

Everything is updated to the latest (As of 7/6) according to LiveUpdate.

The problems seem to stem from connectivity. The admin console will randomly drop the connection ot he BE database- Sometimes once in 2 hours, sometimes several times in a minute. Then I have to click the OK button and put in the password to reconnect. I have one job in particular that runs daily on the non-database information on our SQL server- sometimes it runs, and sometimes it will back up a few GB then throw an error E000846B which is a generic "lost connectivity" error. It succeeds about 2-3 out of six times a week. The backup target is a disk local to the media server, which is on a separate drive-based array from anything else (Except other backup jobs). I have since tried adding a separate network dedicated to the backups- Each server being backed up has a hardware port assigned to this backup network, which has no route to the Internet- Basically a simple LAN on a dedicated switch in which all members have static IP's and can ping each other.

In BE I have the job set to use the network connection for the backup network, and the SQL server has the remote agent set only to publish to the backup network IP address of the media server.

I have a second job that runs on this server as well- it is dedicated to backing up the MSSQL databases on the server. When I run it, it runs for less than a second and fails with an error E0000F02. The only way to get it to run is to allow it to use any network adapter it wants, which will push unwanted traffic over the production network, but does allow it to success most of the times it runs.

We never run more than two backup jobs at the same time as a tape backup, and one of those must be a local backup- This is for the sake of network communications and reducing unexpected errors. We run a B2D2T scenario, where the tape backup runs starting at 3am each day, database backups run at 12am and hyperV/fileserver backups start at 6PM.

I think the common theme here is a network connectivity issue- Our production network uses Cisco Catalyst 2960's @ 100MBPS, and the backup network uses a Netgear GS724T-300 (Chosen for solid history in data streaming applications, such as ghosting.... Any ideas why we are having these issues?

Thanks!

OCA reporting for Time taken to protect client

I need a solution

Dear Experts,

We are trying to get a report from OCA(OpsCenter Analytics) which gives accurate information about average time taken to protect a client. both Full and INCR backups. This will be used to produce to the management after the environment gets additional hardware as Appliance as we are projecting a good performance. The curent NBU and OCA version is 7.0.1. We have tried to derive the job duration report which is available but it "sum" up all the backups ran for a client and produce the result rather than actualy time taken to complete the backup. So in a 24 hours window it shows that the client took 36 hours to complete the backup.

I am really thinking too much but not getting to a good solution for this. Please help me.

Backup Exec 2012 and Storage Provisioning on Dell PowerVault

I need a solution

We are currently running BE 2010 on a Dell PowerVault DL2000. That server is physically attached to a Dell MD1000 storage array. Within Backup Exec, we have a Storage Provisioning license that allows Backup Exec to see and manage the external storage array.

As we attemtp to upgrade to Backup Exec 2012, we are running into problems with Storage Provisioning licensing. First, Symantec claims we don't even have a current license that allows to upgrade Storage Provisioning. This is clearly wrong, as I can provide them with a serial number and proof of purchase. What is more troubling, is that Symantec claims, via Dell, that the Storage Provisioning option is no longer supported in Backup Exec 2012, and they do not have an alternative solution.

My dillema is that since the 2012 upgrade installation sees a previous license for Storage Provisioning, it wants a new license (which Symantec won't get me). I can not complete the install without it. It gives me the option of going back an UN-installing my current Storage Provisioning option, but I am afraid Backup Exec will then no longer be able to see or configure my storage array if I do that.

Has anyone else experienced this or can provide any assistance?

Thanks

Netbackup Tape Inventory Problem

I need a solution

Hi All,

Our tape library was having a problem (HP ESL322E), then the engineer fixed the problem. After that I see "Media and Device Management" -> Media -> Robots -> TLD(1) the content is empty.

So what I did the "Invontory Robot" with the "Inventory operation" tick to "Update volume configuration" and start, it can do the  inventory for all the tapes in that tape library, but after I click OK. the content is still empty ( "Media and Device Management" -> Media -> Robots -> TLD(1) the content is empty)

So what it went wrong? Is it the tape library problem or the Netbackup Problem.

Thank you,

Iwan
