Hi All,

I need some advice on a project I am currently given.

My client wanted to backup his data to tape. His data size is about 200TB which 160TB is MS Exchange, 10TB is SQL and 40TB of other files.

The number of servers is around 100 to 150. All Windows.

The backup window is 12 hours and nothing more and tape encryption is mandatory.

My client decision is to backup to LTO6 tape straight.

I know this is a tough requirement. So I actually suggested to backuup to disk first like NBU Appliance then to tape. I suggested 12 hours to disk and another 18 hours to tape whcih I also considered a tough design.

The client some how is open to this option but he still insists on a solution direct to tape first the the disk to disk to tape as a secondary solution.

Honestly speaking, I have never design such a huge backup before. So I am at a lost. I am already thinking just the numer of media servers alone can already create a server farm. I also do not know how much data a media server can process within an hour.

So can I have your suggestion and opinion on both solution?

Solution 1 - Direct to tape.

Solution 2 - Disk to Disk to tape.

Please let me know if you suggest like a 10Gb backup LAN, trunking FC etc. ideas.

Hi,

 

We are using netbackup 7.5.0.5. I want to know is there a way to set up alerts for skip backup schedule in opscenter. Recently a full backup job was missed, we checked the policy and schedule setting, evrythings seems to be fine as it only happened for one policy. But need to know that if a schedule misses, then is there a way to generate alert from opscenter for skipped schedule.

Hi All,

I am using BE2012 connect to Vcener to backup all of my VMs, however, i figure out two problems, hope someone can helpt to explain:

 

1. The full backup does not backup the full capacity of VMDK. For example, i have one VMs with only ond Hard disk which 20KB, however after the job finished sucessfully, BE2012 only shows me 10GB backed up in job log.

2. BE2012 backup the snapshot ( Servername_000002.vmdk etc.), and when i restore i got folder of 2 files: Servername.vmx and servernam_000002.vmdk but the disk should really be servername.vmdk. Therefore when i try to register this retored VMs, Vphere5 reported error " Unable to create SCSI for SCSI0:0...fail to open disk, unsupported or invalid disk type 7"

 

Can anyone help me to get out of this?

Hello All,

I've enabled JUMBO FRAMES on my backup servers (win 2008 R2) through NIC teaming. Each server has 2 1G NICs configured through HP NIC teaming on the server and also etherchannel from the switch.

I've below 2 questions:

1. How to enable Netbackup application (both Master and Media) servers to be able to accept jumbo frames?

2. Also for backup clients do I need to make any changes to the Netbackup agent on the client to be able to send jumbo frames?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Experts,

As part of hardware refresh we are going to replace a VTL with Appliance. There are sevral SAN media servers which are configured with virtual app clister and backing up from active node of the cluster. As there wont be VTL and Appliace is a Purely Disk based storage, we have no option other than going for SAN clients. So all the SAN media servers will be converted to SAN clients. While doing this we are going to miss the functionality of virtual app clusters which is very bad.

Please give me some inputs for what is the best way to get out of it and follow the cluster.

I need a solution

I am looking for assistance in troubleshoot non-functional error handling rules in BE 2012 sp1a. I read the the how to (HOWTO73481) and watched the youtube video on creating error-handling rules already.

 

We are suffereing from failed duplicate jobs (due to a known issue in BE, http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH200760&viewlocale=en_US that has yet to be addressed).

 

When the duplicate job failes due to this known issue the final error code thrown in the job log is e000810d (see attached)

 

I have a error-handle rule created to address this failure, but the rule does retry the job.

 

Nothing shows in the BE or windows logs that I can see related to any action by the error-handling rule. I am missing something or is there a way to determine why the error-handling rule is not functioning.

Master/Media :Win2K8, NBU: 7.5.0.4

Client : Win2K3, NBU: 6.5.4

I am facing challange in backing large size nsf files i.e. more than 20 GB.

Below is Error  I am getting in detail pane

ERR - failure reading file: Lotus Notes:\E:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Domino\data\Mail\esafety.nsf (WIN32 1: Incorrect function. )

I gone through the below links regarding changing the Backup_timeout parameter but I dont see exact what value I should keep.

Hi guys,

Can someone shed some light on this problem please, i've got this error on a test run job;

Error category    : Job Errors
Error             : e0008703 - The test run has detected a potential problem. See the job log for details.

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34563

Even on the actual job it fails at so long and i get this error;

Error category    : System Errors
Error             : e00084f4 - An unknown error has occurred.

I'm running Backup Exec 2010 R3 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and backin up to Network storage boxes NOT tape drives.

I've done the usual of checking there is enough space on the box, checking i can connect to the box appears to be fine, permission and connection wise, restarted the services and because it doesnt give me much info im not sure what else to do really.

Any suggestions??

What is the name of the main admin tool used to configure your backup jobs in your environment?

And can you access the admin tool remotely? We have auditors coming in to review our backup procedures, and they have asked if its possible in netbackup to have a read only account to the central management tools? I am not a backup admin myself so am playing middle man.

Will the auditor have to remote onto the server where the admin tool is setup? Or can you install the client software remotely?

I need a solution

I am running BackupExec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 with a QuikStor 320GB drive.

I have backup exec set to do a full backup on Friday night followed by incremental backups for the remaining six days.

I am finding that after the first backup that the backup drive is full even though the data on our server is a fraction of 320GB.

Looking at the files on the backup drive I see the following under the VERITAS\B2D:

You can see that there are a number of 52GB files created on Friday night and the early hours of Saturday morning !

The sum of the used space on all the drives being backed up totals under 100GB.

Can anyone suggest what is going on ?

Hi,

we need to install dlo agent 7.5 on pc that have installed a previous version of DLO.

I tried to unistall the previous version and then i tried to upgrade from server share "DLOAgent", but the advice is the same....it cannot find the path of  *.msi to unistall the previous version. But we have formatted some month ago the older server and install BE2012 and DLO 7.5 on a new server.

How can i solve this issue?

Hi all,

I have 2 Exchange Servers in a DAG configuration. Server 1 is,located in the primary site with an active copy of DB1 and a passive copy of DB2. Server 2 is located in a secondary site with a passive copy of DB1 and an active copy of DB2.

I've configured Server1 as my prefered server. Then, I configured one time backup for test with the following settings for the backup job:

- Back up from the passive copy and if not available, try the active copy (recommended) 

- The prefered server is set

When the backup job is launched, it queries Server2 (server in the secondary site)

Am I missing something?

I need a solution

On Windows Server 2003, I've a batch file that is configured as post backup event in Backup Exec 2010 R3. The batch file contains "bemcmd.exe" -o21 -v -e -j"myjob" -c"myhost" command. When backup job is run I get the following error. BE console says job successful.
